What to inspect before buying a used sofa to resell
The short answer: Inspect the frame and support first, then upholstery, odour, pests, labels, measurements and pickup access. Photograph defects and recalculate the deal before money changes hands.
Before you travel
- Confirm width, depth and height, including removable sections
- Ask for daylight photos of corners, arms, cushions and the back
- Ask about smoke, pets, stains, repairs and why it is being sold
- Measure doors, stairs, lifts, vehicle space and the pickup route
Check structure before cosmetics
Sit on each section. Listen for cracks and feel for uneven support. Move the arms and back gently, inspect underneath and check that legs and modular clips are secure. A cleanable mark is different from a loose frame.
Check what photos hide
- Odour, dampness and signs of pests
- Fading, pilling, tears and worn seams
- Collapsed foam, broken zips and missing cushion inserts
- Labels, recalls or safety concerns relevant to the product
Change the deal when the facts change
Record the defects, repair path and extra cost. Update the resale range and maximum buy price before paying. If you cannot identify the defect or safely move the sofa, passing is a valid result.
